Bible Toting Liberal

Have you ever seen that bumper sticker that says "Jesus would have been a Democrat"? Sometimes I wonder about that. Republicans continue to try to act as if they cornered the market on family values and some even call it the "Religious Right". But the party has a whole doesn't follow the fundamental believes of Jesus Christ. I grew up attending a very conservative, small town, Methodist church. But as I grew up, I was very liberal in thought. Over the years I've learned to continue to praise The Lord, but follow my heart when it comes to worldly things.

My liberal outlook compared to that of other church goers actually caused me not to attend church for a 3 year span in my late teens-early twenties. To return back to church, I had to overlook the people of the church, and look to the reason I was really there...to worship The Lord. Some may say my beliefs are contradictions, but I think any good Christian's views would be. Not saying that I am a "good Christian". I battle the devil on a daily basis, and he wins quite a bit. But the people that I know that claim to live by the bible, are mostly on a high and mighty trip. The only thing they can give their fellow man is a bible verse. Don't get me wrong. Many a day a good bible verse has gotten me through, but you should also know when to do more.

If you're wondering what exactly my beliefs are that some may say would interfere with my Christianity? Well, I don't believe in the death penalty under any circumstances...which actually I believe Jesus would agree with. I would like gay marriage legalized. I don't think religion should be taught in school. That's what Christian schools are for. And I don't believe people of other religions are wrong in their teachings. Here's the biggy? Are you ready? I am pro-choice. And I'm not pro-choice only in cases of rape or illness. I am pro-choice in any situation where the mother and father feel they can't give that little child everything that every little baby deserves.

I love the Lord. And my ultimate goal as a Christian is to bring at least one person to Christ before I die. But my ultimate goal as a citizen of the world is to not bombard others with my beliefs and values. To give everyone a choice in what they do as long as it does not harm others. God gave us free will...but those Conservative Christians think they are more powerful than God. They think they can control what you do with your body. Control who you can marry. Control which religion is accepted and "mainstream". This was not God's plan. Jesus was accepting of everyone, but so called Conservative Christians aren't. If we go completely by the bible, slavery would be ok. Polygamy would be accepted. Do we want to go back to those days?
