I really didn't want this blog to be all about race, but I am black and that's a big piece of who I am. And these just so happen to be the things that are bothering me lately. Now...on with my post....
I have been a Big Brother fan since the first season. I haven't missed a season...except that one that came in the middle of the year. It was just a little too...blond hair, blue eyed, 20-29 years old for me. The reason I like the show is because you see how different people of different backgrounds and ages can interact when being cooped up in a house and vying for a small fortune. Well, without fail, the black woman ends up being the enemy. Both with the cast and with the message boards. America doesn't dislike black women.
I think they just dislike strong black women. They like black women who smile, act nice, and pose no threat. This year's black woman is Libra. I was rooting for her in the beginning. I think most of us root for the person that looks like us. It's just our nature. Well, Libra started out from the second episode with an alliance or clique. Nothing wrong with that. But her and her alliance tried to overthrow the top alliance. And she was one of the loudest voices in the upheaval. I personally do not think she was the top voice, but out of sll eight people, she was in three-way tie for the top. I watched the episode with a friend, and remember telling her "she has no chance of winning. She is starting out with attention on her. She's done". After that, she continued to play the game. Whispering and deciding who to target. Was she the only one doing it? No. Was she the main one doing it? No. But the others in the house...and the people on the message boards have made her the main person doing it. If someone said "Jerry is an old turd-head" and she said "yeah"...they would attack her and not even mention the person that made the actual statement. And, without fail, someone on the message boards will ask the question, "do people dislike her because of her race"...and everyone on the message boards will get offended. But it's not just race. It's a mixture of race and gender. The only black guy on the show not only did a 180 on his alliance, but was one of the ones tied with Libra causing the upheaval in the house. Not to mention, he has proven to sell out anybody that's not girl he's currently involved with on the house. But is he on anybody's shit list...not at all. I've began calling it the Michelle Obama Syndrome. LOVE YOU MICHELLE!
If you go to the forum on CBS/Big Brother website...you'll find a few "n" words...not many, but a few. You will also find statements that could be deemed as racist...but only if you are of the race they are addressing, of course. The "n" words don't upset me as much, because we know those people are just hate-mongers. What upsets me are those people that act as if race has nothing to do with their exaggerated view of this woman. Those are the people that have day to day prejudices and can not face it. Those are the dangerous people in society...no matter what race they are. A KKK member has little power in 2008. It's the one that proclaims they are not prejudice but hold all these negative views.
